DNAMy recent book is called the Responsive Universe… what is a Responsive Universe? How about a Cosmos pulsing with vibration, quantum energy and instinctual wisdom…. Humans as conscious entities are connected to this dynamism that is everything. Everything is connected…!

Need more proof?

In a recent Discover Magazine article, author Dan Hurley offers a playful but resourceful analogy: “Two alcoholic mice – a mother and her son – sit on two bar stools, lapping gin from two thimbles.” The mother mouse asks how her son followed the same addictive pattern of alcohol abuse… Ask Darwin and he says it is “bad inheritance”. Freud offers, “It is bad mothering”. Which is it? ….Nature or Nurture; an age-old question right? Neurobiologists, Michael Meany and Molecular Biologist and Geneticist, Moshe Szyf offer up an interesting theory: The human genome has long been known as a blue print of life. Family members can pass on traits including blue eyes, curly hair or undesirable genes predisposed to things like breast cancer and heart disease. Yeah, yeah… right?

Well new research is showing that the genes we pass on might be more responsive that we previously thought. New insights in behavioral epigenetics show that addiction or traumatic experiences in our past, or our recent ancestors past leave molecular scars adhering to our DNA. Molecular structures called Methyl groups attach to genes, altering their expression.  So, you might have not just inherited your Grandfathers large nose but also his predisposition toward depression and or anxiety caused by the neglect he endured as a child.

This is not fringe science either…. Multiple independent research shows us that yes, we live in a Responsive Universe. …and yes, our positive and negative actions and reactions can not only have an effect on us but future generations.  This is where mindfulness takes center stage: As evolving, responsive creatures connected to everything; we need to be conscious of our actions, reactions, addictions, fear and anger as they not only dictate who we are but how future generations may live and be… The same can be said for those that are raised as positive, well grounded children or adults; wellness and betterment the common denominator. Crazy stuff… But true… We do indeed live in a Responsive Universe…
