I wrote the Responsive Universe as a hand book to self-discovery. Within its pages are 9 chapters or Mandalas – each a stepping stone forward in meditation and mindfulness.  Reading and implementing  the helpful daily life practices and guided meditations is a measured process – a journey not to be rushed.

Still, what can we do now in the present moment to immediately bring more happiness and wellness into our busy lives? below is a short list of 5 simple things you can do daily to perpetuate better health and happiness:

Compliment Someone: It is that easy. Whether it is a co-worker, significant other or complete stranger; go out of your way to say something nice to someone else. It is a simple gesture that creates a ripple of quantum positive energy that will eventually return to its source. You!

Drink Water: Seems obvious right? But for those of you who drink soda pop (soft drinks) or other sugary beverages, I am talking to you! Substitute water  and be sure you are getting  enough. Not to get graphic but you should be drinking enough water each day to pee clear at least once. Water is the simplest way to cleanse and hydrate your body.

Revel in the intricacies of Nature

Get out in Nature: I write all the time about how Nature speaks. If you do not know what I mean then you need to be more mindful of the benefits of immersing yourself in our beautiful natural world.  Even if it is for a moment on your break time at work – get outside and feel the sunshine and breathe in some fresh air! Even better, go for a walk in the woods!

Breathe: Even simpler! Well, not literally… Practice mindful breathing if only for a couple of breaths. Breathe in deeply and visualize positive quantum energy entering your body; cleansing your aura or energy footprint. Exhale and feel all the stress, negativity, guilt, fear and suffering leave you – all trappings of the ego. Breathe in positive energy – exhale negative energy; if only for a minute. Easy right?

Root your being in the present moment and not the past or future

Be in the Present Moment:  The past is gone so there is nothing you can do about that. The future has yet to come so there is no sense worrying about something that has yet to arise. When you live in the present moment you are mindful and aware; in full control of your thoughts, ideas, actions and reactions. In the present moment you have two decisions. You can root your energy and intent in positivity or negativity. It’s your call….

5 easy things that will take up less than 5 minutes of your life – it’s that simple!

The Universe does not judge…

The Universe does not reprimand…

The Universe does not promote happiness…

The Universe does not control your destiny…..

…you do

We live in a Responsive Universe. A conscious cosmos where every thought, action and reaction creates a wave of energy and vibration at the sub atomic level. Basic quantum physics already sheds a bright light on how our responses to life are interconnected and intertwined in a quantum field of light, energy and vibration.

Think of the  Universe as a clean slate… An empty canvas…  The conduit for your energy – whether positive or negative.  The Universe responds to your thoughts, actions and reactions. You are the painter adding color to that proverbial painters canvas.  You are the energy and the Universe is your pathway; your medium… Even  when we comprehend the concept of God as it relates to the Universe we have to include ourselves in that equation. It is our positive and negative thoughts, actions and reactions that become the hand of God. We have the power to create a living heaven or a living hell within this Universe and microcosmic world (Earth) that takes heed to our energy footprints; our waves and vibrations of existence.

When you think happy, positive thoughts these pulses of energy translate into positive actions which more often than not are greeted with positive reactions. Society can be thought of as one breathing organism. When you feed this organism with positivity, it responds with positivity.  This is what defines karma. It begins on the individual level. You have the power of happiness within the palm of your hand. You alone can allow the ego to govern your thoughts and actions or you can let your True Nature be the governing force. True Nature is a place within and without your body that is free of ego and false-self. When you strip away all that is negative: Fear, anger, jealousy and greed you are left with only love and positive energy. When you root your intent; your thoughts, actions and reactions in True Nature you connect to sometime genuine and unadulterated.

You are creating a Responsive Universe…. You are in control. The present moment is the essence of God and Universe – the totality of everything at your finger tips. Believe this and you too will live in a Conscious Cosmos… a Responsive Universe….

Nature is and always will be our cradle of birth, the story of life and the doors of cessation that greet us all. Nature is a wellspring of energy, wisdom and wellness. Have you found a connection with Nature? Not just a connection, but an intimate connection…  Most likely if you subscribe to this blog or are mindful of this Responsive Universe we live in then you probably have forged your very own personal bond with the natural world… Think about it… We are part of nature: Made of the same elements, minerals and water. We are born from this environment and when we die we will return to nature. There is a natural energy source that binds us to Nature – a connection to the Universe as one.

“Nature has been for me, for as long as I can remember, a source of solace, inspiration, adventure and delight;  A home, a teacher, a companion.”   – Lorraine Anderson

Great quote from writer Lorraine Anderson… It  is a simple quote and yet it encompasses all facets of nature and our human and even spiritual connection to our natural environment. Once you find this relationship and understand the positive energy associated with nature we can take our journey to the next level.

Within nature is every tool we need to succeed  as happy, mindful, spiritual creatures.  We rely on nature for our survival as a human species and from a more philosophical standpoint, we rely on nature to connect to our True Nature: The pure, unadulterated energy and thought humans possess completely void of ego and false-self. In Nature we can find the silence that lies between our thousands of thoughts that careen through our minds every day. From silence wells wisdom and positive energy.

“Through you nature becomes aware of itself. Nature has been waiting for you, as it were, for millions of years.  Nature can bring you to stillness. That is its gift to you”.  – Eckhart Tolle

Not all of us had wonderful childhoods… We all have made mistakes that we probably regret…. None of us are perfect….  Some of us are damaged little flowers; at the hands of abuse, addiction or loss… Life can be a bumpy road…

Don’t let your past dictate the future…. Only the present moment should define you…

It should be a goal to try and understand the past so that we can correct any control patterns born from past adversity. Control patterns are hard-wired behaviors adopted mostly by the ego that many times unknowingly govern our thoughts, actions and reactions. An abusive or negative past can condition us in thinking we are broken or not worthy. It creates low self-esteem.

We need to understand the past but not allow it to dictate the future. The past is gone… There is nothing you can do about it! We can only change the future. That change begins right now in the present moment. You see, the present moment is the only place in time we have control. Even the future can look foreboding so why fret about something that has yet to materialize? Why continually beat ourselves up for a past we can’t change?

We can only do something positive right now in the present moment. Every little positive change in the present moment will eventually shift that pendulum of negative energy to a better place. Like the sun gazing across the sky in the afternoon; you can choose to sit in the sun or the shade. It is your choice.

When you have control over the present moment; you have control over your destiny….

So you had a spiritual breakthrough? …an epiphany? Maybe you read an enlightening book and it has changed your perspective (hopefully it was mine – LOL). Maybe you read a bunch of books… You feel your space, clarity and insight growing… your vibration and glow expanding? Excellent! Self-discovery and spiritual evolution is the goal in a Responsive Universe…

Do you feel compelled to tell everyone you meditated today? Is your new found wisdom splashed all over Facebook and Twitter 24/7? Do you stop random people and tell them you can see their aura or energy? Are you voicing your new opinions to those around you as if you have been a master teacher your entire life? Do you feel more powerful and self-actualized than others with your new found energy? Do you feel sorry for those easily led by blind faith?

Easy there eager beaver!

…your new found self-discovery is creating a new ego from the one you just got rid of!!!!

what?

As we step into self-discovery and sun bathe in the first light shards of enlightenment it is easy to become intoxicated with this new found energy. Congratulations, you are on the path to Self-Actualization!

IT’S A TRAP!

what?

yep, that’s right…. In order to find this new self-discovery and enlightenment, you had to surrender at least a portion of your false-self or ego to connect more with your True Nature. The trap is that it is easy to fall into a more complex ego born from your new found vision. It is easy to step up on your soap box and preach this new age gospel. Beware, it is unbecoming… People do not want to hear it… Silence is the best wisdom… In fact, living by example is the best teacher… If you feel the need to tell people you meditated today or that you are vibrating at a higher level – or their religion is wrong;  that is your ego talking… not your True Nature…

Say less… Do more….

Don’t judge….

Be compassionate….

Sometimes silence is the best wisdom….

Hey, I have to self-check myself all the time – especially with family. It’s part of the journey and when you are mindful of your energy and place with this Universe and do not let it synthesize more ego – well, you just jumped to a new level in self-discovery and enlightenment….

And yes, this blog post is my friendly reminder….

more on Ego     ….more on True Nature   …more on what the Responsive Universe is…

The Responsive Universe

All the gods, all the heavens, all the hells, are within you.”

– Joseph Campbell

This is a very powerful sentence…. It sometimes takes great minds like Joseph Campbell to effectively wrap up the Cosmos – everything that exists – in one eloquent sentence. Carl Sagan was able to effectively do this as well. Sadly both of these great teachers have passed but their words live on eternally. That is the distinct power of words isn’t it? The inspiration of this particular sentence comes from the great realization of the Upanishads of India in the ninth century B.C. I find it interesting that even thousands of years ago, people were reaching for the heavens and also inward to find the meaning of existence – the how and why…. But what I find truly interesting is that even thousands of years ago, wise people were connecting to this sublime dynamism that…

A  Facebook friend, Elaine Matthews, posted this very simple yet profound quote in her news feed recently. I just love the quote: ” Do not be afraid of your own darkness. Do not be blinded by your own light…”. What does that mean? I know what it means for me…

“Do not be afraid of your own darkness” – We all have pasts – some more torturous than others. We have all faced loss, defeat and yes, sometimes we are our worst enemies. The ego functions of the mind; born from the past and subliminal hard wire thoughts and behaviors; act as the point of intent for many of us. The ego is rooted in fear, anger, guilt, narcissism and a false sense of self-worth – whether positive or negative… Like looking in a mirror, that reflection; like the ego is a fabricated image of ourselves. Like storm clouds the ego can obscure the illumination that is intrinsic to our being. Deep down bubbles our True Nature – this unadulterated and unfettered true-self free from the constraints of societal immersion. For some the darkness is suffering and loss. Experience has shown that deep within the darkness wells lights – It is almost as though we need darkness to raise the vibration of our awareness and clarity. We all have darkness but having faith that light will find its way through the cracks in the walls of false-self, loss and suffering is key to self-discovery and betterment. Further, knowing when to accept the fruits of our labor and suffering is paramount. Do not fear the darkness for within its shadow lies a gift…

“Do not be blinded by your own light” – There lies the fine line between self-discovery and social evolution and the ability to not be sucked back into the ego abyss. It is a paradox of sorts: Through self-discovery the trap is growing another ego from your new found vision and power. Those mindful enough to see the light; to understand that we are just energy changing form – the power of god sitting within the palm of our hands; a spacious connection to this grand Responsive Universe: Well it is easy to let such understanding and power unknowingly rebuild the ego you just reigned in. In times of challenge, sometimes silence is the best wisdom. The lesson in mindfulness is to continually self-check our intent to ensure our actions and reactions remain rooted in True Nature and not False-Self. As illumination warms our face, we want to share this new insight with others but as I have found with excruciating detail; the best teachers lead by actions and not words – a lesson I continually need to remind myself daily. It is easy to become blinded by the light of self-discovery. The art of life is to let the light illuminate your path forward while leading others without dogmatic trappings.

The balance of Light and Darkness is not about opposites but the circle of energy that binds them as one: A Mandala… Both light and darkness exist together – the key is finding the balance between the two facets of human nature. Maybe that is why the hour before sunset is my favorite time of day…

So what does Christmas mean in “Western Culture” to a non practicing Christian? or perhaps a Buddhist or Atheist? Hmmm… maybe I should rephrase that: What does Christmas mean to me; a guy raised in a Christian household but his suffering and wisdom understood with more clarity and insight through eastern philosophy.  A person who is more spiritual than religious? I meditate daily, watch my Karma and really have no internal or external connection to western based religious dogma. I am not a proponent of organized faith but Buddhism does speak to me…

From an American perspective, what is this thing we call Christmas? It is a beast bigger than all of us and the religion that once defined it. We see advertising for it in October.  Some want the Christ back in Christmas! I guess I don’t blame them… Though I have seen a lot of hypocrisy lately with this notion. Something about Syrian refugees; the religious and political right and the fact Baby Jesus and Mother Mary were middle eastern refugees taken in from the cold on a clear night with the North Star sparkling above – or some sort of contradiction like that… It seems Christmas is more commercial than Christian or Catholic. Most of the big retail corporations only want your money in their coffers playing on our emotions and credit cards with heartwarming commercials and subliminal advertising… In the aftermath of Christmas you have reports of holiday heart and reports about whether Christmas was successful from a financial bottom line and not spiritual bottom line. You have got Santa competing against Jesus and Target competing against Walmart. It’s like Holiday Thunderdome out there in the streets! It is a stressful time of year and I think a lot of us caught in the cross fire are thankful when it is all over.

…still, you know what? I love Christmas! uh.. from the commercial side that is.. well, let me rephrase that: I think I am into Christmas for 50% pretty lights and presents and 50% for the holiday idea that it is good to give… .001% for it actually being Jesus’ birthday. My birthday is the day after and it is actually common historical knowledge that Emperor Constantine changed Jesus’ birthday to December 25th at the 300 AD Council of Nicaea – Historically he may be an autumn baby but who knows. What I do know is my birthday is the 26th and it is probably the worst time in the world to have a birthday. I am still damaged from my childhood. There is a lawsuit pending…. But I digress…..

So what do I love about Christmas? I do love the twinkling little lights, the decorations and yes, the food! I love how everyone is in a good mood and people give like no other season. The energy is alive and flowing during Christmas and there is something special about that moment when the dawn illuminates freshly fallen snow and the unmistakable glisten of excitement we see in the eyes of our children. For a moment it seems like everything is perfect in the world. I even like Christmas songs.. even the religious ones like “Silent Night”

Do I thank Jesus for that good Christmas feeling or Amazon.com?

Yes, my family celebrates Christmas. We strings lights, hang holly and buy our friends and family gifts. Still, Christmas for me is not about religious dogma. It is about winter solstice, light, energy and love. More pagan in nature I suppose… Winter is part of the celebration of the Mandala of life. In autumn we see the trees turn as fall takes the hand of summer. Then it is winter that casts its cold gaze over our world. Yet, there is faith that spring will come yet again. Yes, for me, Christmas and New Years is a time to celebrate our lives, be reverent,  to give and center ourselves in the energy of illumination, love and wisdom. A celebration of the past, present and yes… the future!

My Birthday is the day after so do not get mad if I say Happy Holidays to you all!

Ah, hell with it…. Merry Christmas!

universeIf you are new to this blog – then welcome! If you have been following the Responsive Universe for some time then you understand the premise of this “conscious Cosmos” we all live in: Every action and reaction is connected at the subatomic level. That includes your actions and mine as well.  In a Responsive Universe every thought, feeling and memory is linked to this tapestry that is our existence. Our energy is always changing and it can’t be destroyed; the power of God sits at our finger tips; the breath of mindfulness and clarity our compass; nature and silence our temple…

The premise of the Responsive Universe isn’t cult ideology or fringe science. This isn’t dogma or blind faith. Everything tangible and intangible is connected through waves and particles of energy. We are energy, our thoughts are energy and so are the words in this blog.  Quantum Physics and other related sciences shed light on these truths. One can interpret them as gifts and use such offerings to their benefit.  Others settle for archaic religious doctrine that tends to smother our spirit instead of rekindling it. Modern religion is but a snap shot of the bigger picture – Science, the power of God, you and I – we are all part of this immense puzzle that is the Responsive Universe. In short, we are the creator of our own destiny.  This tends to be an unnerving thought for many – especially those of religious faith. Wait, what? No omnipresent ruler in the form of man? Once you take the ego, dogma,  fear and mental conditioning out of the story of human spirituality you are left with two things mostly – you and this vast and beautiful Responsive Universe – a realm where our conscious energy interweaves into the fabric of the Cosmos – where anything is possible with the right mindfulness and energy…

I think we have all heard the old saying – practice what you preach… Well, I am certainly not a preacher and though I practice meditation and mindfulness, I am not perfect and never will be. I am fallible and malleable.  I make mistakes and I will continue to do so. It is not a perfect process but from our screw ups and the bad days that sometimes follow comes an education and wisdom. I have been applying this wisdom to my life for over 15 years. To be free from the constraints of ego and mediocrity we have to find a level of mindfulness and clarity that allows us to see past our own influences: Our parents, teachers, politics, the approval of others, materialistic addiction and even religion – discarding what only feeds our ego and this self-inflicted suffering we continue to subjugate ourselves to.  We need to strive for the things that make us whole with the goal of elevating this mindfulness; this vibration to a higher level. That is the goal of Self-Actualization.

Imagine if every thought mattered… Imagine all the thoughts that float and sometimes careen through your head. Have you ever stopped what you are doing to simply observe the mind and its facilities? The thoughts are endless aren’t they? Even when we sleep our brain is active, replaying old tapes and twisting our fears and desires into picture shows on our eyelids. What if you could control these thoughts? We are our own master right? What about negative thoughts? In a Responsive Universe what you think you project. Imagine the mind as a blank movie screen – you alone are the director; this is your movie; your story of life. What we project on this movie screen will also project out into the world. Quantum Physics explains with painstaking detail that our thoughts and energy react with the smallest features of the subatomic world – we are creating the fabric of the Universe – we are creating our own destiny. We are the hand of God… You are part of the equation; the definition of God and Universe. We are the creators of energy through thoughts and actions. Therefore it makes perfect sense to project positive thoughts and images on that movie screen. Positive thoughts and energy create positive actions. Positive actions will eventually return as positive reactions in a revolving Universe of cause and effect. You alone have the ability to create wealth, love and bliss in your life. You are the director of your life’s story and science now proves the connection to your thoughts and energy and how they affect your surroundings. Think about that… every time a negative thought enters your mind – imagine turning that thought around; taking the ego out of the equation and making something negative into something positive. The first step is simply being mindful of our thoughts and how they could be affecting our wellness. The next step is to begin making lasting changes to your thought process. The more positive energy you create the more positive your life will become. Such positive actions will come full circle with good karma; with your dreams being fully achieved. If you are going to have faith in something – have faith in the notion that you are your own creator – you are God in its many forms… That is not ego, that is True Nature

You are the director of your movie – your story of life. Why not write a feel good movie with a great ending? You never know, there could be a sequel

egotruenature

Night and day… White and black… Life and death….    …So many polar opposites in life and yet one of the most all encompassing comparisons lies within your mind and mental functions: Ego versus True Nature…

What is the Ego? The Ego is your false-self; forged from societal immersion.  It is true; we were not born with an ego. Through our struggles, triumphs and challenges the ego builds its layers of invisible hard-wired behaviors, many times unknowingly.  The ego thrives on the ideals, beliefs, and laws of society and how we perceive ourselves within this society. These ideals color our perception of the world and of life. Our egos become the governing force from which we base our daily actions. The latter force of empowerment creates a false-self that, if unchecked, will foster negative self-esteem. Further, the ego can build this false confidence; though strong and seemingly indestructible, when the fleeting things that build your ego leave, fail or disappear (like money, friends and self-esteem) the walls the ego once built can come crashing down.

True Nature is the opposite of ego. True Nature is everything left behind when you are egoless. Imagine stripping away negativity, evil, fear, guilt narcissism and jealousy (all ego facilities)– what are you left with? Only love, wisdom and positive energy – the heartbeat of existence. The source and energy of our True Nature is born from the Cosmos. Within the Cosmos, quantum mechanics suggests that the behavior of matter and energy is interconnected and that the effect of the observer on the physical system being observed must be considered part of that system. Further, this connection with humans and the Universe explains why Karma and an afterlife are possible. From a scientific standpoint, this energy is dependable and unwavering. Quantum energy can also be defined as a life source that connects to everything that exists in the Universe: From distant stars and galaxies to microscopic atoms within your body. As proven in quantum mechanics, everything has a quality of interconnected energy associated with it. All of this energy is indestructible as energy cannot be destroyed, it just changes form. From a humanistic standpoint, this energy is positive in nature as it exhibits no fear, anger or negativity – these fore mentioned negative traits are of man’s making (ego). This positive quantum energy can include our thoughts, actions and the basis for our existence. It is the common denominator for everything that exists – the true definition of God. Indestructible!

The ego defines the “material world” we were born into and True Nature defines the alternate Universe that exhibits our “True Reality”; everything pure and unadulterated. True Nature transcends all religion and even this world; again, its energy is constant and indestructible. Knowing this breeds clarity and a responsive quality to our minds.

So which polar opposite are you more aligned with?
