michelemeicheSometimes we can be too caught up in ¨being aware¨ that we aren’t actually in the present moment and really living.

The practice of ¨being aware ¨mindfulness¨ is taken too far when we are always pausing to be mindful. In actuality mindfulness is a practice. It is a form of meditation that with deliberate practice is to then allow us to be more completely in the present moment; to then be able to ¨respond¨ to the vicissitudes of life and interchanges that take place in the present moment.

When we live only from a place of awareness we are in a sense “over- thinking” our life.  Awareness is an important step, process; and in fact tool for life. It can be looked at as a spiritual tool, as a type of meditation and definitely as a beneficial life tool. However, when we are doing a Contemplation Meditation, Vipassana, or Dhyana we are in a form of duality. We are observing our thoughts, actions and/or those of another person. Observing implies separation. We separate out to observe as we move into the “Witness State” or the “Detached Observer”. In this state we can gain great insight and awareness; however in living in this state we are not in the present moment. To observe one is reviewing and not viewing.

I know many people in their meditation practice that over rely on moving into awareness before action. This can be a “good” thing; however like any “good” thing taken to far it becomes a hindrance and even a crutch. If in your life you are afraid to respond, then you are not trusting your own Inner Guidance and Inner Knowing; which over time becomes more seamless from a good meditation practice.

One of the purposes of a “Mindfulness Meditation” is to then move into a space of being where you are more mindful – more aligned, tuned into the Higher Directive of your Inner Knowing. This aspect of your being is seamless to the Universe and the energy of The All That Is; or some may term God…. This is the part of you that remembers, knows and lives by your interconnectedness to the All That Is and Resonant Fields of the All That Is. This part is aligned and attuned to the oneness of everything and everyone within the Universe.

It may sound contrary or counter intuitive to suggest that there can be too much “mindfulness”. However, when we remember that meditation is oneness we can then begin to understand that at some point we need to move more from the practice to living, being and responding. This requires an understanding and trust from what we have received from our practice of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a “meditation practice”; however the “meditative state” is just that – a state of being. Even though there truly isn’t a “goal” in meditation it could be said that a focus or use of meditation is to move a person into living more in the meditative state of oneness.

Many times in meditation you come with questions and hope for answers….

These questions can be:
“How can I relax more?”
“How can I find peace and calm?”
“What am I here for?”
“What is the great mystery of life?”
“Who am I?”
“What is my purpose and the purpose of life?”

In questioning we move into a phase of seeking.  Meditation becomes a tool for answering not only the questions of the ego and surface mind, but the deeper yearning we all have within us.  We seek what we feel is outside of us and also what we think will complete us. What seems to be outside of us seems to hold the answers.

As we move into the exploratory phase of finding the answers.  The “right” people; like-minded individuals are an answer.

You are the answer!

We begin to see below the surface of life and find deeper meaning. We find what connects us more to a deeper part of ourselves and gives new
meaning to our life. At some undefinable point we begin to really understand ourself and love ourself  on a much deeper level. In loving and accepting ourself as well as our life it becomes easier to do this with other people. We begin to say: “I just want to be me.”
We then with much more inner knowing say: “I just want to be.” It is in this being that we move into a living meditation…  We begin to see  that all our Spiritual Practice has brought us to a deeper place of Inner Knowing.

There is no place to get to… There is only meditation; which is an acceptance  of “what is”… even when that acceptance of “what is”  ….is us.

michelemeicheIn the book of Chinese wisdom, the I Ching, it is said, “Have an acceptance of fate and be open to being guided.”  This to me is spirit led living.  This can also be called living in the meditative state.

We may not always be able to change our fate. We may not like what the vicissitudes of life bring to us; however we can make our movements through the terrain of our life path with an inner connectedness, inner knowing; as well as peace and calm.  In fact the more we are connected to our inner knowing, the more peace and calm we will experience.

Meditation is a tool and aid for this. Through a consistent use of meditation as a tool for self-development one learns to accept “what is” in life.  This acceptance of “what is” naturally brings an inner peace.  In the “meditative state” we are able to connect with the aspect of our being that always retains it’s interconnectedness to the Universe, everything and everyone. It is hard to not feel safe when we feel this interconnectedness. In this state of being we develop a higher state of inner knowing and trust.  Living from this place of inner knowing and inner trust we experience a deeper sense of belonging, meaning, and understanding of our challenges; as well as life passages.

Meditation is a tool, a doorway into deeper realms of awareness. It is within the deeper realms of self-awareness that we begin to understand the deeper meaning of our life. Meditation is a practice; similar to how a musician or singer practices scales.  Eventually, the singer or musician uses what they have learned in vocal or music practice to sing a beautiful song, or play a heart-moving piece of music. In this way let your meditation practice be the foundation to living in the meditative state.  If there is a goal in meditation, it would be to live in the meditative state more consistently; and the way to do this is to have a consistent meditation practice.  This practice is as diverse as the individuals that practice meditation.  More important than long durations of meditation is the frequency.  The more you meditate the more you live in the meditative state and the more you experience peace and calm.
